Brief History

Artist Dominique Bivar Segurado established Natural Evolution  in 1999. From the initial small rugged pieces produced in the early years the studio has developed into a large and very successful provider of pieces for private and commercial clients. Originally the studio was based in Berkshire but moved from this small workshop to a dedicated studio space in Norwich in 2003. This move saw an increase in the scale and complexity of work created, as well as the volume of pieces created and for the first time the artist was able to meet the demand for her work. Dominique has been invited to exhibit her work for two consecutive years at Chelsea Crafts Show, her work also featured at the Origins show at London’s Somerset House and at the HannahPescharSculptureGardens. The work has been featured in a number of British lifestyle and design magazines, international journals and on BBC television. Furthermore Dominique was AIR (Artist in Residence) for the University of Taiwan and the Taiwanese Government during their Penghu Vision project in 2005. She has recently been selected to tour Japan by the Arts Council in 2007 to represent the finest in contemporary British Arts. Natural Evolution pieces have been purchased by collectors from the UK, Scandinavia, Brazil, USA and the Far East. The work continues to develop in distinct routes.

Technical Information

Except for the recent oil paintings all the pieces in the series are produced using clay, which is cut into eroded and weathered style pieces. These are subsequently kiln-fired up to stoneware temperatures. A variety of glazes are employed depending upon the required finish for each individual piece.

Environment & Context

The pieces take many forms, this makes them suitable for wildly different environments. The very elegant and modern glass mounted wall pieces are designed specifically with contemporary work and living spaces in mind, whilst the freestanding stacked pieces have more typically been commissioned for major external (usually forecourt, garden or lobby) installations for private or corporate clients. The various styles of non functional dishes and bowls have been commissioned for both internal and external presentation depending upon finish and size.

Objective

The pieces are created to appear natural and calming yet at the same time they will stimulate the viewer with intense curiosity. The very essence of the material and form of the ceramic sculptural pieces gently question the perceptions held by the viewer, asking them if what they see is natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, solid or fragile. Pieces in the Natural Evolution project are equally modern yet solidly ancient. The pieces will repeatedly remind the onlookers of many structures they may have viewed and experienced in both modern-urban and traditional-rural environments.

welcome

The name Natural Evolution reflects the key influences on the sculpted ceramic pieces that are painstakingly hand carved for each sculpture, wall piece or bowl; namely the evolutionary effects of erosion and weathering on the natural landscape.  Each year the Natural Evolution studio expertly produces a variety of public and private commissions as well as creating pieces for selected galleries.  If you would like to discuss a purchase or commission please contact Dominique Bivar Segurado.
